Ask Doug: Charity Begins at Home

Because we at City Tile believe so strongly in family being together during the holidays, and that your home is where your family lives and grows, we focus most of our charitable giving on Habitat for Humanities Rutherford County. They offer a great service to the community building affordable new homes for those who would otherwise not be able to own their own home.

For those of you unfamiliar with Habitat for Humanity, it is a global nonprofit housing organization working in nearly 1,400 communities across the United States and in approximately 70 countries around the world. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat works toward their vision by building strength, stability and self-reliance in partnership with people and families in need of a decent and affordable home.

Habitat does not give the homes away, but works with low-income families to find an affordable payment plan with no interest to promote personal pride in their own home. These families also provide “sweat equity” by providing man-hours to build their home and help another family to build theirs.

According to Thrivent Financial, a Habitat partner, in America alone, more than 85 million people struggle to keep a safe roof over their head.

In a recent Atlantic Monthly article, it was noted that 30 million homes in the U.S. have serious health and safety hazards, such as gas leaks, damaged plumbing, and poor heating.

Poor housing conditions are associated with a wide range of health conditions, including respiratory infections, asthma, lead poisoning, injuries, and mental health, according to the National Institute of Health.

City Tile sees it as an honor to be able to not only donate extra materials to the Habitat ReStore for them to sell, but we also help support all of their new home construction during the year by supplying the flooring for them. It is important to give deserving families a chance to give their kids a healthy start in life in their own clean and safe home.

“Throughout the years, City Tile has continued to donate to the Rutherford

County Area Habitat for Humanity,” said Terri Schultz, Executive Director.  “The Young family truly supports our Christian based, affordable housing ministry.  Their donations of flooring products have had a two-part impact on our mission.  First, it allows the DIY shopper to complete home projects with affordable products purchased from our ReStore. Second and most importantly, the sale of these products brings RCHFH closer to building and selling another affordable home to a qualified family in Rutherford County.”

The ReStore is open to the public and it is a great place to purchase discounted DIY and home repair items. It is located at 850 Mercury Blvd in Murfreesboro.
